Maybe I should be happy that Monterey Center has had it. After all, it was regional centers like this that sucked the life out of downtown, and paved the way for the Big Box stores our cities are afflicted with today. But it's hard not to get a little nostalgic for these early strip malls, with their ceramicized bricks and their modernist lines. Even their scale was okay, totally modest by today's hyper-mall standards. I mean, jeesh, compared to a Super Walmart, Monterey Center was a fucken work of art.
