For years, I told people that there was a Sambo's in my hometown, and no one believed me. Sambo's was a national chain that disappeared years ago. Nope, I said. It hasn't disappeared; not entirely, anyway. (And, parenthetically, what's the deal with the name? I was under the impression it was some kind of racial slur, and that's part of the reason you don't see Sambo's anymore. But Webster's says sambo is an international style of wrestling, so now I'm confused). Anyhow, this is the place I thought was the Sambo's, and maybe, a long time ago, it was. But now it's Samburgers. It's on 34th Street. There's no car shelter, you can eat inside, and the signage looks suspiciously corporate, but I included it anyway. |
