This is Metro Tower. It's main claim to fame is that it was slammed into by the tornado that hit downtown Lubbock in 1970. The building is still slightly twisted. Stand at the base and look straight up if you don't believe me. This was one of the first highrises in Lubbock. They built a few more, then stopped. Maybe the tornado made the highrise builders lose their nerve. More likely, it became clear to the real estate guys that Lubbock was never going to be a vertical city. The future was horizontal. It lay flat as a pancake in the cheap farm land at the edges of town. The future would sprawl, not soar. Last time I checked, there was plenty of empty office space in Metro Tower. It makes a good pedestal for cell phone antennas, though. | |
